anne makovec has more on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: arson investigators are here at this storage unit in campbell around the corner from this apartment building behind me. at 1:00 this morning, somebody reported smoke coming from that storage unit when they got here firefighters put out a small fire and found the body of an adult inside. the police won't say how that person died if it's the fire or during the fire. they are calling it an undetermined death investigation not a murder investigation. >> at this point we don't have specific evidence to call it a homicide. we are look at the different possibilities. once we get questions answered we'll be able to better determine what happened here this morning. >> reporter: unit is 6 by 4 feet detached from the apartment building part of a car pot. there is minimal damage to the unit because the fire department put out the fire

very quickly. but arson investigators are here and the police are waiting for more information from the coroner as to who this person was and how this person died. live in campbell, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. now to a developing story we have been following out of siskiyou county near the oregon border. northbound interstate 5 remains closed at this hour after a massive 64-car pile-up. the series of crashes started around 6:30 last night. the pile-up stretched for nearly a mile along the northbound side of the freeway between yreka and the state border. at least 7 people suffered minor to moderate injuries and they were taken to area hospitals. black ice is being blamed for the accident. and here in the bay area, it's a little chilly out there. >> it is more than a little bit chilly by california standards anyway. elizabeth will put some numbers to that. hey, elizabeth. >> good morning. it's anything but hot outside. we have been saying the word cold a lot this morning. i need my thesaurus to come up with a different term. any way you say it, it is quite

chilly out there. we have freeze warnings posted for parts of the north bay frost advisories for everywhere else but especially the east santa clara valleys and along the bay. we are talking about 20s to mid- 30s in the coldest spots. temperatures out the door now. we have deep blue forming meaning it's cold especially up in napa. santa rosa 28 degrees as well as in fairfield. east bay valleys livermore coming in below freezing now and it's been that way overnight. san francisco a little warmer at 41. but obviously, it is chilly everywhere you go. grab a jacket. by this afternoon, we are going to warm things up to about the low to mid-50s so similar to what we saw yesterday. we are going to see some sunshine but you will notice the temperatures are slightly below average for this time of year anywhere from two to actually about 7 degrees below average. in san jose. so we decided to send our

your drive time through the altamont pass. 26 minutes westbound 580. altamont pass to 680. 680 itself okay in certain spots through walnut creek but if you are heading south 680 at calaveras, we have reports of an accident blocking the off- ramp there. ben lomond we have downed power lines and trees down in the road. chp is on scene. there are closures in place. there is one-way traffic control in some spots. so avoid the area. they are saying at least noon until things reopen. back to you. >> thank you. this morning, classes will resume at san jose city college less than 24 hours after a lockdown. yesterday afternoon, a caller reported seeing a man possibly armed with a gun at the tech center building. s.w.a.t. teams and heavily armed police officers searched the campus room by room during a three- hour lockdown. the city college president says the school immediately sent a text and went into lockdown mode. students and faculty were

slowly released from classrooms as officers searched the entire five-story building. >> we definitely barricaded down. we definitely sat there. we hushed our voices, got away from all the windows, mad sure we weren't anywhere near where anyone can look in and we were afraid. >> in the end police found no indication that a gunman was on campus. more people are coming forward talking about interactions with connecticut gunman lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon where lanza and his mother were regular customers say they never heard him speak. they say that his mother nancy lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. meanwhile investigators are still not clear about what motivated him to open fire at that elementary school school on friday. cbs news's marlie hall has more live from newtown. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. while the motive behind this tragic school shooting remains unclear, one thing is for sure, emotions are still raw here in

newtown, connecticut. five funerals are scheduled for today in this one small town and people are still reeling. hundreds gathered for memorial service to remember sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. she died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school. >> you don't have to know her. you just have to know what she did is an act of selflessness and that touches humanity. >> reporter: hochsprung's funeral is just one of five that will be held today. tuesday saw two more children laid to rest. 6-year-old james mattioli loved sports and math. his family called him a numbers guy. and jessica rekos loved horses. she wanted a cowgirl hat for christmas. yesterday was a day of mixed emotions for many parents and students as school reopened in newtown for everyone except the kids who attend sandy hook elementary. >> so, like, surreal. >> reporter: there were some who stayed away. >> my neighbor up the street, her kid didn't come back. >> reporter: but there was also this: smiles from children who appeared to be happy to be

going back to school. the tragedy here has reopened a debate on what kind of guns should be allowed in society, with many now taking a new look at the issue. there's a groundswell of support in washington, d.c. to look at new laws that would ban magazines that hold dozens of bullets at a time even from pro gun legislators. >> i go hunting. i never put more than three shells in my clip. it holds five. >> reporter: even the national rifle association chimed in to say, "the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to make sure this never happens again." >> reporter: white house spokesman jay carney says the president is actively supporting a bill to reinstate the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004.

pass into livermore. so that is increasing your drive time at least now 28 minutes about between that area all the way towards 680. so give yourself some extra time. elsewhere if you are headed along 680 we are still dealing with an accident on the off- ramp but it's clearing south 680 at calaveras not affecting the main line of the roadway. we are seeing lots of green through there. if you are work your way through ben lomond highway 9 they have changed the location shadowbrook road lanes blocked around that area due it a downed tree in the road as well as power lines. chp saying at least noon until all of this reopens up. there was one-way traffic control near glen arbor to get through the area but avoid it if you can. antioch brake lights westbound 4 eastbound slow also through there. but bart is on time. mass transit no delays,'s, muni, caltrain, ferries so a great way to avoid delays. by the way, elizabeth, metering lights are on at the bay bridge. >> looks like things are going to heat up over at the bay bridge. we are cooling things down in weather.

in fact, 10 degrees cooler in some spots than compared to this time yesterday morning. clear and cold start. we got some areas of frost, as well. we have freeze advisories and one out in the north bay and then frost advisories on our east and south bay valleys. we'll see rain returning looks like tomorrow night. so we'll show you a look at the seven-day forecast coming up. it's all about the temperatures. santa rosa, napa, fairfield, 20s below freezing though in consumer report livermore little warmer in san francisco at 41 degrees. clear and cold, no cloud cover out there to warm things up. rain beginning tomorrow evening. we are closely watching that low pressure system moving in from the gulf of alaska. and so it's kind of a slow mover. it's getting here later than we

deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the report says grossly inadequate security because of management failures is to blame. ambassador chris stevens of the bay area along with three other americans were killed in the attack. the report concludes there was no protest before the ambush. that's all part of the unclassified portion of the findings. the rest of the information is only for those with high level clearance. >> it's going up to senate and house assigned reading rooms like we always do with classified information. >> the report acknowledged that the siege was unanticipated and they found no cause for disciplinary action. house speaker john boehner wants a house vote on his latest plan to avoid the "fiscal cliff." boehner's plan b would raise taxes on everyone making more than a million dollars a year while cutting spending to benefit programs like medicare. democratic leaders have already rejected that idea. president obama had been firm

about higher taxes for everyone making a quarter million dollars or more. but now, he appears willing to raise that cutoff point to $400,000. other bay area hid every headlines, berkeley councilmembers took up the "no drone" zone issue last night. drones are unmanned aircraft used beat government to watch over u.s. ports and international borders. critics say the drones are an invasion of privacy. the matter will be revisited next year. people in san jose will finally get fluoride in their drinking water. yesterday the santa clara valley water district approved a plan to fund the project aimed at improving dental health. it will take about two years to get the system operating. 20 minutes after 6:00. they are red-hot. the warriors played the hornets in oakland last night. >> plus unruffled. how a pidgeon crashed the raiders game on sunday. >> and pack your chains if you

weekend on saturday and sunday, before we finally dry out for christmas eve and christmas day. that's a check of your weather forecast. to see how these cool temperatures are impacting the commute, here's gianna. >> let's jump over to the bay bridge toll plaza right now. so far we're seeing business as usual slow-and-go conditions as you work your way towards the pay gates there. metering lights are on so that means you are slow up the incline, as well. delays at least beyond 880 at this point. so as you come off the eastshore freeway, as you work your way through the maze you might see a few brake lights building through there. elsewhere the san mateo bridge bridge though not too badly. extra volume on that westbound side typical this time of the morning. still though about a 15-minute ride between 880 and 101. elsewhere, though, as we jump to our maps on 880 itself, southbound right at a street we have a broken-down bus in the roadway. looks likes it's blocking lanes. traffic is slow approaching the scene. the rest of 880 though northbound not too bad as you head into oakland. 17 minutes between 238 and the maze. and westbound 580 still slow, that accident at vasco over to the right shoulder with a bit of a backup.

>> thank you. a pilot and plane are missing in yosemite national park. the plane was heading from santa barbara to mammoth lakes on monday when it went off radar. it was last seen over the north dome area of yosemite national park. the air force is assisting in the search. but searching has been limited due to bad weather. the pilot's family says he was the only person on board. a public memorial for mexican-american pop star jenni rivera will be held today in los angeles. it will take place this morning at universal city-walk. a private burial will be held separately. rivera died this month after her learjet crashed in northern mexico. six others were also killed. well, a trendy bay area internet company is doing an about-face this morning after a policy change that made users concerned about their privacy. >> here now is kcbs financial reporter jason brooks with more. >> reporter: quite the backlash against instagram that popular

photo sharing site that's owned by facebook. yesterday, it was revealed that the company was making policy changes that would allow it to sell users' photos and information to marketers out there. that resulted in a lot of very angry instagram users and many of them dropped off the site but instagram coming back and saying that that is not its intent. although it does maintain that as a business, it is tasked with finding ways to make money. the housing market is on a rebounded this year and we are continuing to see signs of that. as far as housing starts are concerned in november, we did see a bit of a pull-back. the commerce department reports a 3% drop from the month before. however, future continues to look brighter with building permits up 3.6% and if you compare november to last year at the same time, housing starts were up 21.6%. >> getting strong news from oracle. one of the leading tech companies in the bay area easily topped on profit and revenue expectation. profit was up 18% revenue over

back. one little florida girl may be getting coal in her christmas stocking and here's why. neighbors say the 8-year-old has been stealing holiday packages from their doorsteps. they have the video to prove it. there she goes. and there goes the package. residents in one florida neighborhood set up a sting after they noticed several of their packages missing. they included barbie dolls and children's makeup and things 8- year-olds like. police plan to present the case to the juvenile authorities. and in the spirit of the christmas season one man it trying to make amends for a grinch like deed he did 30 years ago. an anonymous man wrote a letter to california mart saying he stole $200 in merchandise from a cincinnati store three decades ago. he also included a money order for $1,000 with the letter. >> you know, i'm always a forgiving person and as kmart as a whole we don't hold any bad intention against anyone.

small fire at a storage uni they got the call about a quarter after one this morning... to an apartment ll. police say it san francisco firefighters discovered a body at a small storage unit at a fire in the south bay. they got a call to an apartment building in campbell early this morning. police say it's too early to
